2.3 million consumer credit records stolen
An employee at Certegy Check Services, Inc., a subsidiary of Fidelity National Information Services, stole 2.3 million consumer records that included credit card, banking, and other personal information. The employee then sold the information to a data broker, who sold it to direct marketing companies.
Certegy says the data was not used for [tag]identity theft[/tag] or [tag]fraud[/tag], but who really knows? The company says 2.2 million of the consumer records contained bank information, and 99,000 contained credit card information. Certegy is asking a court to stop all parties from using the information.
The employee who stole the information was a senior database administrator who was with Certegy for 7 years. He has been fired, and the company refers to him as a “rogue and dishonest employee.” The company is pursuing a civil action against him, and hopes that criminal charges will be filed too.
