Auditing & Regs

I thought it would be fun to feature some of the Google searches used to find FRAUDfiles, so hopefully the searchers can check back and find answers to their burning, burning questions.

Today’s search:

what if you can’t provide documentation for a irs tax audit

Answer:

Big trouble. The burden of proof rests upon the taxpayer. That means that the IRS can pick a number for the taxes you owe, and it’s your responsibility to prove that they are wrong.

Lack of documentation is a serious problem. What I typically do for clients in this predicament is use the documentation they have and make estimates. Then I explain why those estimates are correct and reasonable.

Hopefully you’ve got something to present to the IRS in your defense. If you do, a professional can often help you use that small bit of information to plead your case.
