The Milwaukee NBC affiliate is reporting that Corinna Kuhnke allowed her 2-year-old to smoke a cigarette at a restaurant. Witnesses say that a woman with Kuhnke and her son lit the cigarette that the boy put in his mouth. Kuhnke denies it all, and says that her son just got his hands on her cigarettes that were on the table, but that no one lit it.
Kuhnke and her aunt both received citations for giving tobacco to a minor.

Question: Did Enron have good cash flow?
Answer: No. That was one of the signs that a fraud was occurring. In spite of financial statements that showed increasing revenue and profits, the company was constantly in a poor cash position. This is one common red flag of fraud discussed in my book, Essentials of Corporate Fraud.

One of Milwaukee’s largest Catholic churches is likely the victim of financial fraud at the hands of a now dismissed priest. Leaders at St. John Vianney in Brookfield are urging people not to rush to judgment and to wait until the forensic examination is over and we have all the facts. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like the news will be good.
Last December, Father Leonard Van Vlaenderen was arrested and charged with misdemeanor cocaine possession. He has pleaded no contest to the charge and will be sentenced this month. He was put on leave from the church, and three parishoners began examining the church’s books. Read the rest of this entry »

eBay is considering going “PayPal only” and is starting the policy in Australia in June. How do you suppose eBay users will react to this? I suspect not well. Not well at all.
When eBay bought PayPal a couple of years ago, buyers and sellers recognized that eBay was going to be getting greater profits off many of the sales on eBay via the extra fees from PayPal transactions. But buyers and sellers still had a choice to accept other forms of payment. If the “PayPal only” rule is implemented across the board, it’s likely to anger a lot of loyal eBay users. It could… Upstart Blogger is giving away more cool stuff. This time it’s a great domain name with an established blog with a stream of advertising revenue. Not a bad giveaway, if I might say so myself. So here I am, throwing my name in the hat and maybe (just maybe) I will win.
Yep… Upstart Blogger is a nice blog that discusses blogging and monetizing. What I like about the site is that it’s not a blantant “I’m just telling you this so that I make more money” type of deal like a certain clown out there. (I’m purposely not mentioning the clown or linking to his site because I refuse to give him any traffic!) You see, telling people how to make money on the internet can be a money-maker these days. But there are sites that do it right and sites that do it wrong.
Ashley at Upstart Blogger (IMO) does it the right way. It feels natural and not like a gimmick. And he provides interesting insight on things. I usually cruise by once a day to see what he’s discussing today. And today… I might be a big winner.

The Huffington Post ran a really nice story about the one and only Timothy Sykes today. Tim just rolled out a new website, which is kind of a portal for everything related to stock trading. Of course he peddles his book and DVD set there, but he also details his stock trades and teaches others his methods.
Tim is notorious for being arrogant and flamboyant. I see it mostly differently: He has a total passion for what he does and stands up for what he believes in. He is trying to teach others about his craft (shorting penny stocks) and although some may disagree with that as a trading strategy that can work for the common person… I give him kudos for believing in the strategy and teaching others about it accordingly. Mother: Angelique R. Vandeburg of Sheboygan
Act: Shooting her daughter with a BB gun to win a $1 bet with her boyfriend
Last week, Vandeburg’s 8-year-old daughter reported the incident to a school counselor. She said that her mom had 10 to 12 beers with her boyfriend, and the boyfriend offered Vandeburg $1 to shoot the girl with the gun. She accepted the bet and shot her daughter in the leg. The girl was wearing 3 pairs of pants and received a bruise where she was shot.
Vandeberg and her sister have said the girl is lying to get the mom in trouble. Riiiight.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - (Business Wire) Five years after Gradient Analytics first reported on UTStarcom (UTSI), the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has announced accounting fraud charges and a settlement fine against two UTSI executives for “false financial filings.”
Gradient Analytics initiated coverage of UTSI on Sept. 25, 2003, after finding that “insider selling activity ha[d] ballooned” at a time when the company was reporting “extremely high accruals… and anemic cash flows.” Gradient’s report also noted that, “despite a 77.4% increase in earnings, UTSI’s operating cash flow declined over 300% in the six months ended 06/30/03.” Read the rest of this entry »

Chalk another one up for the tax hell. Someone is suggesting another tax for Milwaukee County, this time a $10 per car registration fee. I can hear it now… “But it’s only $10!”
Soon we will be paying more than half of our incomes to taxes. Who thinks of these things? This one is to help prop up the county bus system. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: Read the rest of this entry »
