Shop to Earn member says the company won’t refund his money

This isn’t the first reader commenting here about their ability to get a refund from ShopToEarn (aka ShopToEarth). If you sign up as a member, there is apparently a clause which offers refunds, but members seem to have a hard time actually getting their money back.

Mutual funds suck!

I hate mutual funds. Check this out:

Out of almost 2,100 diversified retail U.S. stock mutual funds that are open to new investors, just 17 have positive returns for both the past 12 months and year-to-date, according to investment researcher Morningstar Inc.

Less than 1% of mutual funds are in the black for the last 12 months. How is that possible with “professionals” running them?

Let the bashing of Sarah Palin begin!

This is priceless. CNN.com has a commentary by Paul Begala on John McCain’s selection of Sarah Palin for his running mate. He says in part:

Palin a first-term governor of a state with more reindeer than people, will have to put on a few pounds just to be a lightweight. Her personal story is impressive: former fisherman, mother of five. But that hardly qualifies her to be a heartbeat away from the presidency.

What about Obama? He is completely unqualified to be president, but we’re supposed to ignore that. Let’s face it, neither Obama nor Palin have national or international political experience.

But Palin has actually accomplished things in her political career, unlike Obama who couldn’t even be bothered to vote yes or no on a couple hundred bills (opting instead to vote “present” which gets him out of having to decide).

So yes, Palin may lack political experience. But she has no less experience than Obama. And she’s actually made big changes in Alaska during her tenure there. What had Obama accomplished? We’re still waiting for his supporters to name even one thing.

Barack Obama’s experience (or lack thereof)

“You know, I am a believer in … in knowing what you’re doing when you apply for a job. Uh, and I think that … if I were seriously to consider running on a national ticket, I would essentially have to start now, before having served a day in the Senate. Now there may be some people who are comfortable doing that, but I am not one of those people.” — Barack Obama, 2004

Wasting more taxpayer money at MPS

I know you’re not surprised anymore. I’m not surprised. Milwaukee Public Schools officials spent district money to go to a conference in Philadelphia, and the employees didn’t even attend the conference.

The problem is that when you’re wasting thousands of dollars of taxpayer money to do it, someone needs to be held accountable. I’m not surprised at this. MPS teachers don’t even go to the annual “convention” that they’re supposed to attend. A few peons show up and fraudulently sign in for others who don’t go. So it’s clear that cheating in regards to conferences/seminars is a systemic problem in MPS. [Read more...]

What Joe Biden says about his running mate

Only in Eugene Kane’s world

For those who aren’t local to Milwaukee, Eugene Kane is a columnist for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel who writes about racism. No matter what happens, it’s always motivated by racism.

The debate about light rail has been going on for years. The bottom line is that it won’t work for Milwaukee. It’s too expensive, will have too few riders, and won’t have enough reach to make it worthwhile. But in Kane’s world…

Frankly, the resistance to light rail has always seemed to me motivated by concerns other than economic ones, particularly the potential for residents of the central city to access suburban locations where jobs are more plentiful. In Milwaukee, the anti-light rail crowd often seems more intent on limiting, rather than expanding, the ability of inner-city residents to find jobs.

Who knew that people were against light rail primarily to keep inner city (black) people from getting jobs in the suburbs? A grand conspiracy, indeed!

When money talks, Mark Shurtleff listens

How much does it cost to get Mark Shurtleff, Utah’s Attorney General, to lie for you? Apparently only $5,000. What a bargain!

Today Sam Antar has an enlightening piece on his blog, entitled “Overstock.com (NASDAQ: OSTK) CEO Patrick Byrne Pays Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff to Defame a Blogger.” It details a situation in which a $5,000 Overstock.com campaign contribution to Shurtleff was followed immediately by public lies by Shurtleff. And there’s plenty of evidence to support the claim that Shurtleff blatantly lied. [Read more...]

Age of Chinese gymnasts must be investigated

The Olympic rules are simple: Gymnasts must be at least 16 years old to compete in the Olympics. There have been plenty of accusations about underage Chinese gymnasts on the ladies team, and it seems there’s evidence as well!

One only has to look at these girls to know they’re not 16 years old. Yes, a small frame and careful dieting can lead a 16 year old to be slim and mostly undeveloped. But there is a visible difference between that and the appearance of 12 and 14 year olds. We’re not stupid, and you can see the youth reflected in the faces of these young athletes. [Read more...]

State looks for more ways to spend our money

You can’t open a newspaper or watch the evening news without hearing how poor our state is. Someone is always lamenting the fact that Governor Jim Doyle just doesn’t have enough taxpayer money to spend. And of course, the only answer the politicians ever come up with is to tax us more. Heaven forbid that anyone would stop spending so much.

Yet every time we turn around, someone is coming up with a new way to spend our money. Today’s gem is almost $11 million of taxpayer dollars, which will likely be approved to buy a chunk of land in Mukowonago. It’s a 970-acre property known as Rainbow Springs, a chunk of land that has not been successfully developed, even though several people have tried. [Read more...]
